Commitment to Diversity

Bilzin Sumberg's culture is built upon the unique experience, skills, perspectives and values of each of our attorneys and staff. Our diverse backgrounds and individual differences are seen as assets that enhance the quality of life for each of us and strengthen what we can accomplish as a firm. We are committed to maintaining a diverse workforce and to increasing the awareness of and sensitivity to our cultural differences in order to create an inclusive environment.

To that end, Bilzin Sumberg has created a Diversity Committee comprised of a diverse group of partners and joined by the Hiring Partner, the Executive Director and the Director of Recruiting & Professional Development. The Diversity Committee's mission is to facilitate the implementation of proactive policies addressing the issues of recruiting, training, retaining, and advancing qualified attorneys and staff in all practice areas with the goal of maximizing the diversity of the firm. In addition, the Diversity Committee monitors existing policies and procedures to ensure they are consistent with and actively promote the diversity goals of the firm.

In 2008, Bilzin Sumberg was honored with the Law Firm Diversity Award presented by the Cuban American Bar Association (CABA). This award, presented to law firms with more than 50 attorneys, was based on the results of a survey recently conducted by CABA, in which one of the most critical criteria for selection was an evaluation of the firm's progress toward diversity.

In 2009, Bilzin Sumberg was chosen as one of five firms across the country, and the only firm in the state of Florida to participate in the 2nd annual Legal Diversity Pipeline Program, a joint partnership between two non-profit organizations that promote diversity in the legal profession: the National Association for Law Placement, Inc. (NALP) and Street Law, Inc.  During the multi-week program, Bilzin Sumberg staff taught juniors and seniors enrolled in law classes at Coral Gables Senior High School about contract disputes, the Fourth Amendment and real estate negotiations.  The program culminated with a day-long conference held at Bilzin Sumberg's office, which offered interactive workshops, as well as a career fair for students to explore the array of jobs and practice areas in the field of law.

Our diversity program has top-down support from management and is widely embraced at every level throughout the firm. We invite you to contact any of the diverse members of our firm so they may share their experience and expertise; we would also like to extend an open invitation to diverse student organizations to allow us to meet you and to be a part of your educational process. We would be pleased to participate in networking events, interview skills training or any forum that would help better acquaint you with our firm.

If you have any questions about Bilzin Sumberg's commitment to diversity, please contact the Chair of the firm's Diversity Committee, Marshall R. Pasternack at 305.350.2356.
