GET TO KNOW HAL
When the world’s wealthiest families need assistance with international tax planning, global estate planning, or planning related to investing in or moving to the U.S., they come to Hal. Head of Bilzin Sumberg's International Tax & Private Wealth Group, Hal advises high-net-worth private clients, family offices, and trust companies from across the world, particularly the U.S., Canada, Latin America, Europe, the Caribbean, and the Middle East. He regularly provides advice regarding foreign trusts with U.S. beneficiaries, pre-immigration tax and estate planning, planning for large gifts and inheritances being received by U.S. persons from foreign persons or foreign estates, foreign investment in U.S. real estate and business interests, and tax compliance and reporting.

For Hal, a client’s privacy is sacrosanct. Like his legal work, Hal’s reputation for discretion is well-known. As a result, his clients trust him with details rarely shared outside a very small, closed circle. Hal forms bonds so close with his clients that they oftentimes treat him like part of their family.
Q & A
What do clients value about working with you?
I am an honest, trustworthy, sensible and discreet person. I am also a good listener. Clients are comfortable divulging extremely private information to me they may not have told many other people. It means I have incredibly close relationships with my clients.
Why does your practice thrive in Miami?
Miami has become a magnet for ultra-high net worth international individuals, and many of those individuals have financial investments and investments in real estate located in Miami. In addition, many international business transactions have some connection to Miami. The city is also an important location for access to and from Latin America and the Caribbean.
What is keeping your clients up at night?
Many clients are concerned about the implications and timing of the new Common Reporting Standard (CRS) being implemented and managed by the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development).
