GET TO KNOW RICHARD
Few, if any, tax lawyers approach their work as Richard does. By leveraging complex tax and estate-planning techniques and connecting personally with his clients, Richard has formed decades-long relationships with domestic and foreign ultra-high-net-worth individuals, families, entrepreneurs, and their businesses.

For many clients, Richard has been their trusted counsel since they started. They have come to him again and again for advice as they grew from up-and-coming entrepreneurs to, in some cases, billionaires undergoing major liquidity events. He has been their ally and confidante, a steady presence for them, their families, and their businesses.
Q & A
What makes you stand out from your competitors?
I combine sophisticated income tax and estate-planning techniques that many other attorneys do not commonly use. For example, through preferred partnership interests I can provide for the tax-efficient transfer of wealth from one generation to the next. For my foreign clients, I regularly make use of treaty countries to minimize taxable gain for their investments in U.S. real estate and other types of businesses. I also establish certain types of trusts for foreign individuals to avoid U.S. estate taxes for their U.S. descendants.
What kind of relationships do you have with your clients?
Over the years I have become a trusted advisor and a close personal friend with many of my clients. They have turned to me throughout their careers as they began as entrepreneurs and then grew their business empires. For example, one client I started out doing estate planning for, I had to restructure his entire company during the downturn to deal with income tax, estate planning, wealth preservation, and corporate governance issues. Since the economy has recovered, we are moving forward with numerous real estate developments including planning for the start of an entire new town. Another client I have worked with on numerous ventures, from starting a technology fund in Israel to restructuring his technology and real estate holdings.
What keeps your clients up at night?
They worry about the liability that can come from personal guarantees. To address this, I incorporate the concept of wealth preservation into everything I do. This provides the added benefit of protecting clients and their family members from banks, other family members, and other third parties.
