John C. Sumberg, managing partner, served as the Real Estate Group chair for over 20 years, and has been practicing in the area of commercial real estate for over 35 years. He routinely handles all types of complex real property transactions and has represented clients in a wide variety of matters involving commercial and residential properties, including regional malls, mixed use, entertainment and resort facilities, shopping centers, office buildings, condominiums, condominium/hotels, hotels and apartment complexes, community developments, golf courses, marinas, industrial properties and large tracts of undeveloped land. |

In the corporate area, John provides counsel to a variety of closely held businesses including family businesses, representing clients in asset and stock purchases, corporate acquisitions, joint ventures, partnership formations and general corporate matters. |
| Experience |
- Represented a prominent real estate developer and in the $1 billion, 900,000 square foot redevelopment of the Sonesta Beach Hotel in Key Biscayne, Florida.
- Represents a real estate acquisition group and its principals in connection with various acquisitions, totaling more than $1 billion to date.
- Represented a developer in the $200 million Mary Brickell Village project – the first mixed use retail/residential/parking garage downtown project in more than 20 years. Handled all aspects of the project, including assembling 25 parcels of land, partnership agreements, zoning, retail leasing, raising of equity, financing, creation and sale of air rights parcel, negotiations among the various owners with respect to rights to the parking garage and negotiations with the architect and general contractor.
- Represents a real estate the joint venture in the acquisition, rezoning and redevelopment of a major parcel on Lincoln Road in Miami Beach, Florida. The designers of the project, Herzog and De Meuron, are the world famous architects from Basel, Switzerland, recipients of architecture’s most prestigious award, The Pritzker Architectural Prize, who designed the Olympic Stadium in China and the $450 million expansion of the Tate Modern Museum.
- Represented a prominent developer, in the creation and acquisition of a 99-year ground lease for 38 acres in Charleston, South Carolina, and in connection with the development of a mixed-use project, including a Hilton hotel, a 450 slip marina, a retail center, vacation resort condominiums and cottages.
- Represented a bank holding company and its subsidiary, a closely-held bank, having deposits in excess of $1 billion and eight branch locations, in its $158 million sale to Banco Popular North America, one of the nation´s leading community banks.
- Represents an institutional lender in numerous lending transactions totaling more $750 million to date, including a $118 million loan for the development of the Setai residential condominium and hotel development in Miami Beach, Florida.
