Bilzin Sumberg Adopts Senior Day Care Center For Second Annual Service Day
Miami, Florida - Despite recent reports that South Florida has the lowest percentage of adults who volunteer in the community, Bilzin Sumberg Baena Price & Axelrod LLP is proud to announce that Miami´s Seymour Gelber Senior Day Care Center was the beneficiary of Bilzin Sumberg Cares' second annual Bilzin Sumberg Cares Service Day, marking the program´s one-year anniversary and the commencement of the new charity partnership. Attorneys and staff from Bilzin Sumberg pushed aside their legal documents in favor of paintbrushes, shovels and gardening tools at the second annual Bilzin Sumberg Cares Service Day. More than 100 Bilzin Sumberg volunteers spent the morning landscaping the grounds of the Gelber Center, an organization that provides an interactive environment for physically- and mentally-impaired senior citizens, with activities including adult education, mental and physical well-being classes and general supervision and support. Additionally, volunteers painted the outside of the building, created murals, assembled shelves and storage units and engaged in arts and crafts activities with Center clients. "In selecting the Gelber Center, we chose an organization which views itself as preeminent in its field of endeavor—much as we view ourselves. We were so impressed by the dedication and enthusiasm of its directors and staff," said Marshall R. Pasternack, Partner and leader of the firm´s community service initiative. "They meet the challenges of handling a diverse group of clients, many of whom are burdened by the onset of memory and other cognitive challenges. The Center really provides a caring, dignified and creative environment for its clients to enjoy their lives." The Gelber Center is a State-licensed adult day care/respite service that is offered to frail and impaired adults and their caregivers. The average age of the Center´s clients is 84.5, with the oldest being 101. The Center´s clients are diverse - African-American, Hispanic, Asian and Caucasian. In addition, several different religious groups are represented and the clients were born in 15 different countries. Bilzin Sumberg Cares is a volunteer employee-based community program and the first and only of its kind in the South Florida legal community. Springing from the firm´s desire to positively impact the community, the program has created the opportunity for attorneys and staff to work hand-in-hand to help shape the community. Bilzin Sumberg Cares serves as a vehicle for the firm´s support of non-profit organizations. .
