Q & A
Which past experiences have most shaped your career?
Prior to joining Bilzin Sumberg, I worked with the Environmental Protection Agency in Boston. Before that, I worked as a regional water supply planner in Virginia, which required the development of a plan for water resources over a 15 year span. Both of these experiences gave me a keen sense of environmental regulations, and how best to interpret them in order to help my clients navigate various regulatory processes.
How has your scientific background impacted your work?
We often hire environmental consultants to assess contamination impacts to our clients' properties, but it's my job to make sure we've turned every stone. Having a technical background is invaluable, because it allows me to understand how the consultant is thinking while reconciling all of the possible contingencies. I think of it as a scientific experiment – the consultant is looking for A, but it's my job to also consider A, B, and C in order to achieve the client's end goal most efficiently.
Outside of your billable work, which accomplishments are you most proud of?
I sit on the Board of Directors of Girl Power, a locally-based organization that's geared towards providing support to girls aged 7 to 17 from disadvantaged communities. Along with an afterschool program and a science and technology-based summer camp, we counsel girls through their real-world issues, and often offer additional support to their parents. We try to counsel the whole family whenever we can.

I also sit on the Executive Board of Directors for CREW-Miami, an association dedicated to providing a forum for real estate professionals to engage and interact within the local commercial real estate industry.

"Having a technical understanding of the work I do really sets me apart and helps me develop effective strategies to various types of environmental issues."
