Q & A
What distinguishes you from other litigation attorneys?
I take the time to learn my clients’ businesses from top to bottom. I know who my clients’ customers are, who their competitors are, and what challenges their industries are facing. If you focus exclusively on the dispute before you, you may miss critical factors that may prove detrimental to the client’s business in the end, even though the litigation was successful in the short run. I don’t just want to know about the issues in dispute, but how those issues will affect my clients’ businesses, both today and in the future. Armed with that nuanced understanding, I work with my clients to put a winning strategy in place, and relentlessly pursue it until I meet my clients’ objectives. It’s an entirely holistic and different approach to litigation.
How do you provide value for your clients?
I view my job as providing practical advice that considers both the legal and the business risks. I understand that litigation is not just about winning in court, but about accomplishing a business objective. I don’t just tell my clients what the risks are – I help them make the tough business decisions necessary to succeed in both litigation and business. Instead of getting involved once something goes wrong, clients frequently bring me in at the beginning stages of a business deal. Clients want my perspective as a litigator in order to minimize the risk of a dispute later on, or to place them in the best possible position when a dispute does arise. As a litigator, that kind of prophylactic advice is unusual, but it’s extremely valuable for the client.
What makes international litigation unique?
The most important aspect of international litigation is being able to reconcile different legal systems, customs, and norms. The ability to understand not just the language of a contract or law, but also the extent to which cultural norms affect concepts of fairness, patterns of negotiation, or even beliefs regarding the proper method or resolving disputes plays a vital role in the acceptance and successful functioning of international litigation.
