Q & A
What do you enjoy most about practicing law at Bilzin Sumberg?
Bilzin Sumberg hits a sweet spot for me that is difficult to find at other firms. On the one hand, Bilzin Sumberg’s Real Estate Group is a nationally-recognized powerhouse, where I have the opportunity to work on large, sophisticated deals. Each transaction is unique and challenging in its own way. On the other hand, the firm’s practice of housing all its attorneys under one roof in Miami makes for excellent cross-collaboration between different practices and the ability to get to know all my fellow attorneys very well. Being able to readily call upon colleagues in land use, government relations, and construction, in addition to my immediate practice group, is immensely helpful in efficiently tackling client issues as they arise.
How did working in local government affect your current practice?
When I served as Executive Agency Counsel for the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development, I took the role of lead attorney for many transactions entered into by the agency. In addition to the legal skills I developed by representing the City, as lender and regulator, in complex multi-party transactions, I also gained many soft skills that I continue to utilize in my practice. These include effective collaboration with all transaction parties to keep deals moving, a thoughtful approach to each transaction that takes into account its unique characteristics, and anticipating (rather than just reacting) to issues that may come into play for new projects.
