Mitchell E. Widom participated in a panel of class action attorneys focusing on California Calling: Class Action Trends and Developments That May Be Coming To A Jurisdiction Near You at the Cambridge Forum on Defense Class Action Litigation. The panelists discussed trends in California Class Action Practice and how those trends are impacting or will impact courts across the country. More specifically, the panel went over California Settlements and the new Northern District of California guidelines and the guidelines impact on court scrutiny of settlements, cy pres, the settlement approval process and plaintiff attorney fees, evidence and class certification (including the impact of Sali), ascertainability in class certification and how the rejection of ascertainability has been addressed in subsequent cases and California's Unfair Competition Law and the increasing number of courts that have ruled that UCL can only be used if there is no adequate remedy at law.
