Keymorada Invitational Fishing Tournament Brings Over 200 Law Firms Together

Press Release
April 24, 2014

MIAMI – April 2014 —The Keymorada Invitational Fishing Tournament to benefit the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) is one of the top fundraising fishing tournaments in the country. Now in its tenth year, more than $4 million has been raised, with $510,000 raised last year alone. This year’s event will take place May 6-9 at the Cheeca Lodge & Spa in Islamorada.

The Keymorada Tournament was founded by Bilzin Sumberg Partner and Litigation Practice Group Leader, Mitchell Widom, along with his wife, Alicia and brother, Glenn, following his daughter’s Crohn’s disease diagnosis. Since its inception ten years ago, the Keymorada Tournament has grown into one of the most successful fundraising fishing tournaments in the country.

According to Mitchell, what has made this tournament so unique in its success is the generous outpour it receives yearly from the legal community. Each year roughly 200-300 firms from across the country participate in the tournament.

“The amount of support we have been able to garner from the legal profession has been simply incredible,” said Mitchell. “These law firms, which typically go head to head in the courtroom, have found common ground in the fight to find a cure for these terrible diseases that often afflict children.”

Some 1.4 million American adults and children suffer from Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, and as many as 150,000 are under the age of 18. Most people develop the diseases between the ages of 15 and 35. Proceeds from this year’s event will be donated to the CCFA, as well as the University of Miami’s Elaine & Sydney Sussman Crohn’s and Colitis Clinic. The Clinic, the first of its kind in South Florida, had its grand opening on April 30, 2013 and was funded with the assistance of the Tournament.

Mitchell has a broad commercial trial practice with extensive experience in numerous jury and non-jury cases. He has handled litigation involving class actions, multi-district litigation, construction, partnership disputes, land use litigation, bankruptcy preference, fraudulent transfers and insurance. He has represented major corporate defendants in lengthy and prominent jury trials, and he has been appointed over 25 times by judges in Dade County to act as a Special Master for evidentiary hearings and discovery disputes.
