Memorial Scholarship for Samuel C. Ullman

Press Release
July 02, 2018

Miami, FL– To honor the memory and legacy of Bilzin Sumberg Tax Partner Samuel C. Ullman who passed away in March at age 74, the firm is partnering with the University of Florida to establish a scholarship paying tribute to his passion to the practice, commitment to educating aspiring attorneys, and to benefit future students pursuing a career in tax law.

On top of serving as Partner of Bilzin Sumberg’s Tax Group, Samuel was an adjunct professor at UF’s Fredric G. Levin College of Law in Gainesville, where he also graduated from law school in 1967. Throughout his career spanning five decades he served as chairman of The Florida Bar’s Tax Section, in which he was active throughout his life, and clerked for the U.S. Tax Court in Washington D.C.

This new fund, “The Bilzin Sumberg Samuel C. Ullman Memorial Endowed Graduate Tax Programs Scholarship Fund,” will coexist with the school’s “Sam Ullman Annual Review,” a program that encourages young attorneys to become more involved with the Tax Section.

“Sam always went the extra mile to show kindness and be a mentor to others,” said Michael Minton, Chair of The Florida Bar Tax Section, past President of Dean Mead and longtime friend of Sam’s. “There is not a more fitting person for this scholarship. Sam was always willing to step up and volunteer and was always a positive influence – through his practice, his teaching, his active involvement in the profession and as a loving husband and father.”

Bilzin Sumberg has agreed to fund $100,000 over 5 years to its fund. In return, The Florida Bar Tax Section voted to start a matching contribution fund of $5,000 for the next 6 years in Sam’s honor.

“Sam was a truly passionate lawyer and outstanding member of our firm’s Tax Group,” said Richard M. Goldstein, Partner, Tax and Estate Planning Group Chair for Bilzin Sumberg. “Sam reached the very top in everything he did, we are forever grateful to have known him as both a colleague and friend, and we know this scholarship will have a significant impact for future law students.”

The spendable income from the fund will be used for scholarships and other financial assistance for students enrolled in the Graduate Tax Programs at Levin College of Law.

“Sam was a wonderful professor and colleague,” said Charlene Luke, Professor and Associate Dean for Tax Programs at Levin College of Law. “He worked tirelessly on behalf of our students, and he always made time to offer a kind word and a warm smile. We miss him a great deal, and we are so grateful to know that through this fund he will not be forgotten.”

A special tribute will be made by The Florida Bar Tax Section July 4 at the Annual Amelia Island meeting during Sam Ullman Year in Review. Donations can be made online at and designated with the fund name in the notes section.
