Miami, FL – Bilzin Sumberg has awarded the 2025 Martin A. Schwartz Mentor of the Award to Real Estate Partner James Shindell and to the late Shawn Wolf, former Practice Group Leader for Tax & Private Wealth, in recognition for their outstanding commitment to training, coaching, and mentoring junior attorneys at the firm.

“We are immensely grateful to Jim and Shawn for their longstanding contribution to equipping our emerging attorneys with essential skills,” said Bilzin Sumberg CEO and Managing Partner Albert E. Dotson, Jr. “With Shawn’s passing felt deeply among colleagues and peers, we humbly recognize his selfless and highly impactful initiative in developing talent across the firm.”

Named after, and inspired by, the extensive, decades-long mentoring efforts of renowned Real Estate Partner Martin Schwartz, the 2025 Mentor of the Year Award constitutes the firm’s celebration of mentorship at Bilzin Sumberg – now in its fourth year - which was conceived to recognize the vital role that mentorship plays in preparing attorneys for improving client service and furthering professional development beyond the academic training received at law schools.

A Real Estate Partner widely recognized in South Florida’s real estate community for his deep knowledge of real estate law and extensive experience guiding developers and owners on transformational projects, Jim’s mentees can be found throughout the firm, up to the highest leadership. His legal acumen and generous investment in his colleagues has been instrumental in building Bilzin Sumberg’s Real Estate Group into the premier, nationally recognized practice that it is today.

Awarded Mentor of the Year posthumously, Shawn was deeply respected in the tax law community as a preeminent practitioner, as evidenced through his abundant industry leadership roles and appointments, which stretched from the Tax Section of The Florida Bar to The American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. Recognized by his mentees as a consummate teacher who possessed unwavering patience in explaining complex concepts to others and who took enjoyment in training younger attorneys, Shawn was passionate about deepening the knowledge and skills of fellow tax and estate planning professionals.

As with prior honorees, Jim and Shawn have played a defining role in making mentorship an integral part of Bilzin Sumberg’s firm culture.
