Law360, Miami -- Florida's U.S. Senators on Friday reappointed Albert E. Dotson Jr., the government relations and land development practice group leader at Bilzin Sumberg Baena Price & Axelrod LLP, to the state's federal judicial nominating commission.

Dotson, who was first appointed to the commission in 2009 by Sens. Bill Nelson and Marco Rubio, will begin a third term on the commission, which recommends candidates for presidential appointments as federal judges, prosecutors and U.S. marshals.

Dotson works on securing federal and local government procurement contracts and obtaining land use and zoning permits for large real estate developments for clients.

He currently represents the Tishman Hotel and Realty LP-led South Beach Arts, Culture, Entertainment LLC that recently was selected for a $1 billion project to redevelop the Miami Beach Convention Center. Dotson told Law360 earlier this year that the redevelopment project — the largest public-private partnership to date in Miami-Dade County — has been one of the most challenging projects in which he's ever been involved.

He also previously helped Italian transportation company AnsaldoBreda to secure a $300 million contract with Miami-Dade Transit for 136 new Metrorail cars and worked as lead counsel on a project to develop 400 acres of oceanfront property in Palm Beach County.

Dotson, a Miami native who holds a bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College and a law degree from Vanderbilt University, has also served as co-counsel for Florida Power & Light to help the utility with land use, zoning and permitting for a proposed nuclear power plant site in southern Miami-Dade County, according to Bilzin Sumberg.

Dotson and the 20 other attorneys — some in private practice, others in academia — in the judicial nominating commission for the Southern District of Florida will be tasked with recommending candidates to fill the two vacancies on the bench in that district.

The Middle District of Florida also has two vacant seats on the bench as well as an open U.S. attorney position, according to a July 15 letter from the two Florida senators.
