November 2, 2009

Miami, FL With the beginning of November in South Florida, Fall is in full swing, temperatures are cooling and preparations for the holiday season are already underway around the community. Recognizing the importance of giving back this holiday season, the law firm of Bilzin Sumberg Baena Price & Axelrod is seeking to embody the spirit of the holidays by declaring the month of November "Bilzin Sumberg Cares Month." Bilzin Sumberg Cares is the firm's community outreach program. Created in 2007, the employee-driven program aims to empower attorneys, staff and their families by providing them with the tools and assistance to benefit local non-profit and charitable organizations. During the next couple of weeks, the firm has lined up several events and activities in which firm employees may demonstrate their continuing dedication and commitment to the community.

Bilzin Sumberg Cares Month began with the annual United Way of Miami-Dade campaign, in which the firm held a week of events and activities to raise funds for the non-profit community organization. Some of the activities included a bake sale, ice cream social and various raffles.

Beginning November 2nd, and continuing throughout the rest of the month, Bilzin Sumberg will be collecting gently used clothing, shoes, accessories, furniture and collectibles for the recently opened Lotus House Thrift Shop. The Lotus House is a local women's shelter, which provides support and sanctuary for homeless women and their children. All proceeds from the thrift shop benefit the women and children residing at the Lotus House shelter.

On November 3rd, the firm hosted 50 students from Coral Gables Senior High School for an all-day conference as part of the second annual NALP/Streetlaw Legal Diversity Pipeline Program. During the conference, Bilzin Sumberg staff taught the students about contract disputes, the Fourth Amendment and real estate negotiations. The Legal Diversity Pipeline Program partners selected law firms with nearby, diverse high school law classes in an effort to provide engagement and education between aspiring law students and real-world legal professionals. Bilzin Sumberg was selected as one of five firms across the country, and the only firm in the state of Florida, to participate in this multi-week educational program.

On Saturday, November 14th, Bilzin Sumberg will participate in the 6th Annual Minority Mentoring Picnic, which draws minority law students from all over Florida to meet with local legal professionals.

The following Saturday, November 21st, Bilzin Sumberg will host its 3rd annual Bilzin Sumberg Cares Service Day. This year, the service day will be held at Phillis Wheatley Elementary School, located in the heart of Overtown. Built in 1952, Phillis Wheatley Elementary School was the first African American elementary school in Overtown and currently services grades K-5. During the service day, Bilzin Sumberg volunteers will landscape a new playground, paint the exterior of the building, and design and paint murals around the campus.

Bilzin Sumberg previously partnered with Southside Elementary School in downtown Miami, as well as the Seymour Gelber Senior Day Care Center in Kendall. Both service days involved landscaping and beautification projects, including themed learning and butterfly gardens, painting, mural design and storeroom organization projects. In addition, Bilzin Sumberg volunteers engaged with clients of the Gelber Center in various arts and crafts activities.
