Bilzin Sumberg Honored with Lawyers for Children America's John Edward Smith Child Advocacy Award

Press Release
May 20, 2011

Bilzin Sumberg Baena Price & Axelrod LLP announced today that it was honored with the "Volunteer Firm of the Decade" award at the Lawyers For Children America's (LFCA) 12th Annual John Edward Smith Child Advocacy Awards Luncheon on May 20, 2011. LFCA's mission is to protect the rights of children who are victims of abuse, abandonment and neglect by providing quality pro bono legal representation and collaborating for systematic change to improve the lives of children.

In addition to this distinguished award, litigation partner, Adam Haimo was one of the five attorneys honored with the 2011 Pro Bono Attorney Award for his active involvement with LFCA.

Our firm is honored to share our talent and resources to support the mission of Lawyers for Children, said John Sumberg, managing partner of Bilzin Sumberg. We applaud the efforts of our attorneys and of all of this years John Edward Smith Child Advocacy Award recipients.

Bilzin Sumberg has received the John Edward Smith Child Advocacy award three times since 1998, when LFCA was established in Miami. This is the first time any firm has been presented the "Volunteer Firm of the Decade" award. The firm's continuous commitment to community service through various initiatives, including pro bono representation of children in the Greater Miami area, hosting training sessions for new volunteers, and, most recently, hosting the LFCA Mentor, Attorney and Peer Support (M.A.P.S.) initiative for teenage foster care youth of LFCA, has made Bilzin Sumberg a front-runner for the John Edward Smith recognition.

"Bilzin Sumberg has been a longtime partner with Lawyers for Children America and has the highest number of volunteer attorneys offering their services to our children each year over the past decade," said Carolyn Salisbury, Executive Director of LFCA Florida office. "We first presented Bilzin Sumberg with the John Edward Smith award 10 years ago and we created the 'Volunteer Firm of the Decade' award to honor Bilzin Sumberg's invaluable consistency in volunteering," added Salisbury.

Bilzin Sumberg's commitment to the surrounding community and organizations like LFCA extends far beyond the office. With more than ten percent of the firm's attorneys involved with LFCA, the firm continues to pledge its commitment to the positive development of the South Florida community through its Bilzin Sumberg Cares community outreach initiative.
