Bilzin Sumberg Volunteers at 2014 Miami-Dade County Special Olympics
Miami, FL – As athletes competed in various track and field events at the 32nd annual Miami-Dade County Special Olympics earlier this month, Bilzin Sumberg attorneys, employees and their families volunteered as "huggers," accompanying participants to their events, cheering them on and providing support throughout the games.
Hundreds of Special Olympics athletes participated in events including softball throw, shot put, high jump and wheelchair races in the qualifying meet for the upcoming state-wide Special Olympics Florida Summer Games 2014. The games were held at the Traz Powell Stadium at Miami Dade College North Campus.
Alan D. Axelrod, Bilzin Sumberg Partner and Chair of the Corporate & Tax Group, has been volunteering at the event for almost 30 years. It was his dedication to the organization that sparked the firm's participation through its community involvement program, Bilzin Sumberg Cares. "Every year, I am inspired by the enthusiasm and passion shown by the athletes," said Mr. Axelrod. "It is truly a special day for everyone involved – both the athletes and the huggers."
The Special Olympics Miami-Dade County is a local branch of the global organization dedicated to empowering individuals with intellectual disabilities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
