To the Editor:
Since 1924, United Way has served as a bridge, linking all sectors of the community and bringing diverse partners and competitors to the same table — all for the betterment of our community.
United Way is supported by 34 law firms and nearly 500 Miami lawyers when they come together every year to strengthen the community by committing their time, talent and financial support.
This past year, attorneys in Miami-Dade gave $2.2 million through their workplace United Way campaigns, and 86 of them served on United Way committees and its board. Others participated in hands-on projects like Bilzin Sumberg Cares Day or joined the ReadingPals volunteer readers program to help prepare 4-year-olds for school and life.
Law firms come together every year through numerous United Way initiatives, including the Associate Legal Mingle, UPS 5K, VeritageMiami and Mayor's Ball, among others.
Recently, more than 200 staff, associates and partners from 10 law firms challenged each other on a different kind of court to benefit United Way's work in education, financial stability and health. The third annual Dare to Dodge Dodgeball Tournament creates enormous esprit de corps for each law firm, while also offering the opportunity to be part of something bigger.
The United Way board appreciates the enthusiasm of the players, cheerleaders and supporters from Akerman, Bilzin Sumberg, Carlton Fields Jorden Burt, Fowler White Burnett, Genovese Joblove & Battista, Greenberg Traurig, Hogan Lovells, Holland & Knight, Kluger Kaplan and Stearns Weaver Miller Weissler Alhadeff & Sitterson. All the firms congratulate Greenberg Traurig on its victory.
The success of a South Florida law firm is based on the firm's penetration and connection to the community. Our professional and personal success is directly tied to the health and strength of the community.
United Way's annual campaign is in full force. There are 359 companies and organizations actively engaged in raising funds to build a stronger Miami. In turn, United Way invests in 113 quality programs at 54 nonprofit agencies.
