Q & A
What types of challenges most excite you?
One aspect of real estate law that I find most compelling is the mutual interest of the parties to close the deal. That common motivation encourages creativity and flexibility when negotiating terms or settling an impasse. I take pride in being a practical thinker who likes analyzing a problem, weighing competing options, brainstorming ideas, and developing untraditional solutions that protect our clients and get the deal done.
How do you guide foreign investors interested in the U.S. real estate market?
Foreign investors want to understand the norms of U.S. transactions and the real estate investment process from start to finish. Most are looking for income-producing properties before committing to real estate development. I like to explain the “must-have” provisions of a purchase and sale agreement and explain the complexities of the due diligence process, including land use, zoning, environmental assessments, and unfamiliar U.S. practices such as title insurance. I also collaborate with colleagues from other practice areas, such as our international tax team, to provide a multi-disciplinary approach for my foreign investor clients.
