Bilzin Sumberg Cares Day Tackles Beach Cleanup at Oleta River State Park

MIAMI, FL – On February 12, in connection with its Bilzin Sumberg Cares community involvement program, Bilzin Sumberg partnered with Volunteer Clean Up, a local volunteer organization, to undertake a trash collection and disposal activity along the shoreline of Oleta River State Park in northern Miami-Dade County.
Bilzin Sumberg attorneys, staff, and families gathered at one of the park’s pavilions to learn about the environmental damage caused by the extensive and global proliferation of plastics trash, and strategies to mitigate its spread. The Bilzin Sumberg team then set off with buckets and gloves to gather as much garbage as possible over the course of the morning before regathering to combine and properly dispose of their hauls.
“Bilzin Sumberg Cares allows us the unique opportunity to learn through our service to the community,” remarked Lori Lustrin, a Partner in the Litigation Group and Co-Chair of the Bilzin Sumberg Cares program, “With every volunteer event we come away with greater understanding for how we can all be more responsible stewards for our communities going forward.”
Over the course of several hours, the Bilzin team collected a combined 100 pounds of garbage, underscoring for every participate the serious environmental danger that plastic trash posesand the need for widespread action to ensure responsible and sustainable plastics use.

The mission of Volunteer Clean Up is to create a space where people can build teams, communicate with each other, organize their own events, find a local cleanup and volunteer a couple hours of their time, a place where students or businesses could organize their own folks to clean up a section of their neighborhood - whether in the water, on the coastline, or on land.
