Press Release

Miami, Florida — Bilzin Sumberg, one of Florida’s preeminent business law firms, is expanding its Tax and Private Wealth practice with the addition of Mauricio D. Rivero as a Partner and Adriana O. Ortiz as an Associate. Mauricio is a well-respected tax attorney with significant domestic and international experience advising foreign investors, family offices, high-net-worth individuals, and businesses, with a particular focus on inbound investment into the United States. The additions further strengthen the firm’s nationally and internationally recognized Tax and Private Wealth team and its ability to serve clients with sophisticated domestic and cross-border tax, trust, and estate planning needs.

Mauricio’s practice encompasses U.S. tax structuring and compliance, inbound and outbound investments, treaty planning, cross-border mergers and acquisitions, corporate and partnership taxation, business succession planning, pre-immigration and expatriation planning, fund structuring, and the income and transfer tax treatment of foreign trusts and estates. He also advises financial institutions and foreign trust companies on FATCA and CRS matters and represents clients before the Internal Revenue Service and the U.S. Tax Court in tax compliance, voluntary disclosure, and tax controversy matters.

Over the course of more than three decades, Mauricio has served as a partner at both Nelson Mullins and Akerman, practiced for six years at Holland & Knight, and spent 10 years as a revenue agent with the Internal Revenue Service. He also teaches corporate and partnership tax law at Florida International University College of Law.

Adriana joins the firm as an Associate in its Tax, Trusts & Estates group, where she will advise domestic and international individuals, families, and businesses on sophisticated tax, trust and estate planning, and related private wealth matters. Before joining Bilzin Sumberg, Adriana was with Grant Thornton and KPMG, two of the world’s largest accounting and professional services firms, where her work focused on the tax aspects of mergers and acquisitions and other complex corporate transactions. Following her time in public accounting, Adriana served as an associate at Nelson Mullins.

“Mauricio is exactly the kind of lawyer we want to add as we continue growing Bilzin Sumberg — a highly regarded practitioner with strong client relationships, deep community roots, and a practice that complements several of our firm’s core strengths,” said Bilzin Sumberg CEO and Managing Partner Albert E. Dotson, Jr. “International investors, family offices, and high-net-worth families are increasingly looking to Florida as a place to invest, and the additions of Mauricio and Adriana further expand the depth of our team serving those clients.”

Mauricio’s arrival is the latest in a series of high-profile attorney additions at Bilzin Sumberg. Last month, Jimmy Morales, former Miami-Dade County Chief Operating Officer and Miami Beach City Manager, joined the firm as Special Counsel.

Bilzin Sumberg’s Tax and Private Wealth practice works closely with attorneys across the firm to spearhead transactions, investments, and business and wealth planning strategies on behalf of clients in Florida, across the U.S., and abroad. The firm has been recognized as a Law360 Florida Regional Powerhouse for three consecutive years, and its Tax and Private Wealth practice holds a Band 1 ranking in Chambers USA.

“Bilzin Sumberg has built an exceptional platform for clients whose tax, business, investment, and wealth planning needs intersect,” said Mauricio. “The firm’s statewide reach, relationships with family offices and high-net-worth clients, and experience across the sectors driving Florida’s economy create a tremendous opportunity to build an even stronger international tax practice. I’m excited to be part of that growth.”

Mauricio is a member of the Society of Trust & Estate Practitioners (STEP), the American Bar Association Tax Section, the Cuban American Bar Association, the Florida Bar Tax Section International Law Committee, and the Greater Miami Tax Institute. He earned a J.D., a Ph.D. in History, and a bachelor’s degree in English and History from Florida International University. He is admitted to practice in Florida, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, and the U.S. Tax Court, and is fluent in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.
