The Sky is the Limit

Miami’s ever-changing skyline is set for its biggest upgrade yet. With the Federal Aviation Administration’s recent decision to allow buildings in Miami to reach a height of 1,049 feet above sea level, One Brickell City Centre is expected to surpass the Four Seasons Hotel and Tower to become the tallest building, not only in Miami, but in the entire state of Florida.

One Brickell City Centre, a Swire Properties project, will be located on Brickell Avenue, adjacent to SW 8th Street. The centerpiece of the second phase of development of Brickell City Centre, the plan is for the new landmark to be a mixed-use skyscraper with retail shops, office space, a hotel, and condominium units. 

The skyscraper is not the only major upcoming addition planned to the area, and how long One Brickell City Centre will remain the tallest building in Florida after its completion is still somewhat of a mystery. Florida East Coast Realty, the development company of Tibor Hollo, has also recently filed plans to build a tower to a height of 1,049 feet above sea level at 1201 Brickell Bay Drive. This would surpass Hollo’s Panorama Tower which is currently under construction and sits right across the street at 1101 Brickell. Set to rise to a height of 868 feet, the tower will, at least temporarily, be the tallest residential building on the east coast south of New York.

In addition, SkyRise Miami, an iconic, uniquely shaped tower being developed by Jeff Berkowitz located next to Bayside Marketplace, will be built to a height of 1,049 feet above sea level. The building was originally designed to be 1,000 feet, but these plans were altered after the FAA amended the height restriction. Its height, shape and location will undoubtedly be prominently featured in those panoramic blimp shots seen nationwide during local sporting events.

The rapid changes to Miami’s skyline within the last decade have been astonishing. Upon completion of any one of the abovementioned buildings, only New York and Chicago will have taller skyscrapers. The addition of these new mega-structures will continue to highlight the growth and potential of the city.
