Q & A
What would you say is an issue affecting your franchise clients?
The National Labor Relations Board’s (NLRB) decision to treat McDonald's as a “joint employer” of workers at franchised locations. This decision strikes at the heart of the franchise system as a whole. It affects franchisors and franchisees equally by creating uncertainty as to franchisors' legal exposure with regard to the management of employees of their franchisees.
What issues are you passionate about?
I am passionate about the need for diversity and inclusion within the legal industry. I think our industry has generally moved in the right direction with the help of clients and the corporate community; however, there is still much work to be done. To this end, I take a lot of pride in my involvement with the ABA Section of Litigation's Judicial Internship Opportunity Program (JIOP). As the Miami Regional Co-Chair, my work is to oversee the placement of diverse and nontraditional law students with state and federal judges in the Miami-Dade community. We hope the placement helps each student to gain invaluable experience from interning with a sitting judge and gives them an opportunity to make meaningful professional connections before they even graduate.

I am also proud to be a member of Florida International University's Vice-Provost Council, a prestigious community relations board, which through a variety of meetings and events brings the needs of the business and civic community to the campus, influencing the future of bright young minds. The Council also helps to build community networks, and raise scholarship funds for local and first-generation students.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve received?
“Expertise is an ongoing learning process” -- I think this is one of the best pieces of advice that I’ve received early in my career. Although I am a quiet person, I maintain a competitive drive from my years of playing basketball, which constantly pushes me to be better. I try to remember that expertise and success is a process, and that has helped me to focus on being excellent today. In so doing, I grow from every experience.
