A Partner in the firm's Construction Law & Litigation Group, Felix principally represents owners and developers in the negotiation and preparation of construction-related documents including professional design agreements, construction agreements, and development agreements. His counsel on transactional construction matters is complemented by his robust experience in mediation, arbitration, and litigation of claims involving construction contracts, construction and design defects, insurance, surety bond, and related matters. Felix works closely with clients throughout project administration to identify and achieve early resolution of potential disputes on construction projects and has extensive experience working with foreign developers in the South Florida market.

Prior to his legal career, Felix owned a local development company where he managed numerous residential housing projects from inception, to bidding, to construction. Since 2003, he has maintained licensure as a Florida Building Contractor.

Q & A
How has your background in contracting contributed to your practice?
In construction law, knowing the business and the management of construction projects first-hand holds enormous value in practicing as a construction attorney, but there aren't many attorneys who are also construction industry professionals holding active contracting licenses. Knowing the ins-and-outs of construction practices, site management, and the roles of different trades reinforces my knowledge of construction law so that I can better counsel my clients on what is practical, achievable, and critical, whether in negotiating contracts or litigating claims.
What should real estate owners and developers know about Bilzin Sumberg’s Construction Law & Litigation Group?
Our Group focuses exclusively on protecting the interests of clients as real estate owners and developers, and the benefits of this are two-fold. Firstly, we have developed specialized insight into construction issues and areas of legal exposure that are most critical to owners and developers. Secondly, this focus minimizes the potential for conflicts-of-interest, which can be a concern when engaging firms that also represent contractors and subcontractors. Clients can rest assured that our sole focus is their interests. Because our construction attorneys are adept at handling both transactional matters and dispute resolution matters, we also use our experience from litigation, arbitration, and mediation of construction disputes to expertly analyze weaknesses, areas of exposure, and important points of negotiation in construction-related documents.
